Is tae kwon do a good martial arts?

I know it's mainly for competition, or for show, and that's also why I like it. But can i defend myself from someone who is untrained?
Yeah, it's muay thai. I love muay thai and all, and I'm DEFINITELY gonna practice then when I'm older, but right now i have no need for it. you can beat the living hell out of people with that art, but i just want to have some sort of self defense, and was wondering if tae kwon do is any good at all.

It depends on the instructor. There are a few main branches of TKD (ITF, WTF, and in the US, ATA) as well as some independent instructors. There have been some instances where at least one branch has earned a nasty reputation as a McDojang. Others are not. While there may be an emphasis on the sport versus self-defense, boxing has the same "problem."

There are some really great TKD dojangs and instructors out there among the bad ones. Unfortunately it's not as easy as saying that TKD is "good" or "bad." You have to research the instructors in your area to find a good one.
